Mexican Fry Bread w/ Orange Honey Butter

Ingredients
[Dough]

  • 1/4 cup oat blend flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp shortening
  • 5 tbsp warm water
  • 2 cups vegetable oil
  • [Orange Honey Butter]
  • 1/2 cup butter  [1 stick]
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp grated orange peel


Directions
[Dough]

  • Mix flours, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut [or mix] in the shortening. Stir in warm water. Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Knead and fold until smooth. Cover and let stand for 15 minutes. Form into 1 inch balls, keep covered. Roll each ball into a thin 3 inch circle.
  • Cover circles with waxed paper to keep them separated. Pinch and pull the circles' edge [lightly]  and drop into a medium high preheated cast iron skillet with vegetable oil. Fry 1 or 2 at a time. Fry 1 minute on per side or until golden brown.
  • Serve with the orange honey butter.
[Orange Honey Butter]
  • Cream butter until fluffy [using the whip paddle on the blender]. Add the honey and the peel. Mix well. Serve at room temperature. [2/3 cups]
